Princess Sen

At the age of only 7, Princess Sen was married into the Toyotomi family through a political marriage. However, she lost her husband, Toyotomi Hideyori, during the Battle of Osaka in the summer. In her grief, Princess Sen met Tadatoki, the son of Honda Tadamasa, later Lord of Himeji Castle. It was an unusual marriage for the time, as they married out of love, and they lived at Himeji Castle for 10 years until Tadatoki's death.

Hishi-no-Mon
(Hishi Gate)

The Hishi-no-Mon (Hishi Gate) is a yagura-mon (a gate with a tower set on top) that fortifies the entrance to the Himeyama and the Sagiyama (Shiroyama) hill. The stone and mud wall extending from the front of the gate acts as a screen that prevents those outside from seeing in. The area behind the gate is a masugata, a space where soldiers would assemble. The gate takes its name from the wooden flower emblems that decorate its lintels.

Himeji Castle

Himeji Castle was built at the beginning of the 17th century, when Japan’s unique castle architectural techniques had reached their peak. It was the first site in Japan to be registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, in 1993. It was also designated a National Treasure, in 1951.
It is called Hakuro-jo(“White Heron Castle”)because of its brilliant white exterior, and it thought to resemble a white heron taking flight.
